Objectives of education

This course unit offers significant methodology on art criticism and review, by giving a comprehensive perspective on art history, through thematic routes valuing the relation established between knowledge and protection, art collections and history, art history and culture history. The subject will also make sure that building and developing art history knowledge and historical-artistic terminology is relevant to the general profile of the programme.

Key learning outcomes

– Understand the major artistic movements addressed on the programme.
– Articulate such movements with the circumstances during which they arose and developed.
– Identify the main features of each artistic movement under consideration.
– Apply art criticism methodology, from prehistoric to contemporary times.
– Develop themes about art history and their translation.
– Produce an informed and coherent interpretative text about a specific heritage art object.
– Search and catalogue on an autonomous basis Portugal’s artistic/ historic heritage.

1. Periodization of pictorial and architectural art, using examples of Portuguese and Italian art.
2. Romanesque style.
3. Gothic style.
4. Renaissance style.
5. Baroque style.
6. Mannerist style.
7. Thematic routes of the North of Portugal.

Teaching methods

Expository lectures, complemented with innovative and experimental hands-on work.
The study of art history will be integrated according to a theoretical approach in combination with practice, making students “rediscover”, study and cataloguein locopart of the Portuguese heritage, to be later published on dedicated websites.

Assessment methods

The applied methodology will be continuous assessment, based on research and translation assignments carried out during the semester.
