Objectives of education

Completion of an internship in professional setting together with the presentation of a report. The internship aims to demonstrate preparation for the labour market, through the preparation of the internship project, its completion and subsequent presentation.
Or drafting of an original piece of research with the presentation and public defence of dissertation. This aims at showing the student’s capacity to later developing, in an autonomous way, an original and relevant piece of research leading to a doctoral degree.

Key learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student with a positive grade will be capable of:
– Linking specific complex information in the research domain being worked on.
– Analysing and discussing experimental and/or numerical data.
– Demonstrating skills to critically analyse and evaluate information and its translation choices or other attributed tasks.
– Communicating and questioning the results of the developed research with insight, accuracy and summarizing capacity.
– Drafting the text which embodies the Dissertation/ Project/ Internship Report.
– Qualifying for the presentation and public discussion of the Dissertation/ Project/ Internship Report.

Program summary

There is no specific course unit syllabus content. Each student elaborates his or her thesis project or individual internship, submitted for validation by the Pedagogic Council of the Institute of Arts and Humanities. However, each candidate must organize:
1. Advanced bibliographic research and construction of its respective glossaries, translation memories or other files.
2. Acquisition and laboratorial information handling.
3. Use of advanced analysis techniques and specific ICTs for Translation, Localization, Audiovisual Translation or Tourism Content Construction.
4. Writing of the Dissertation/ Project/ Internship Report text.

Teaching methods

The trainee develops his or her work autonomously.
His or her placement in the work position follows the rules of the institution/ company according to the protocol signed by the parties, whenever its signature is required.
Academic supervisor(s) follow and counsel the work according to the student requests.
According to UMinho’s regulations, supervision work involves regular meetings held with the supervisor(s). If the internship’s work schedule  frequently held at other cities or countries, does not allow regular face-to-face meetings, guidance shall be accomplished through electronic mail or telephone or video conference.

Assessment methods

The host entity draws up a statement and an evaluation of the candidate, which will be taken under consideration by the jury. The evaluation will be regulated by law and take place before a jury appointed by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Arts and Humanities of UMinho.
