Objectives of education

This course unit promotes a real hands-on multilingual communicational context through its interdisciplinary and modular format. It is aimed at allowing students to systematic apply methodologies, techniques, tools, translation and multilingual communication technologies so as to sort out typical problems of these linguistic combinations and knowledge domains, while taking into account specific purposes, themes and contexts.

Key learning outcomes

1. Acquire the major underlying provision goals of a communication and translation service according to multilingual contexts of general and specialized nature.
2. Develop linguistic skills in the target languages (English, French, German, Spanish).
3. Identify the main stages of a translation project within the scope of language services provision.
4. Apply the adequate methodologies related to the process of translation and multilingual text management.
5. Discover and use adequate supporting strategies and tools designed for translation execution.
6. Apply translation, proofreading and quality evaluation techniques to the project.
7. Draft specialized and technical reports, portfolios adequate to the different stages of translation process development, and handle documentation elements/ general and specialized bibliographical references.

Formal prerequisites

– Advanced knowledge of source languages (English, French, German and Spanish).
– Deep knowledge of the target language (Portuguese).
– Basic notions of the main translation techniques and procedures.
– Translation Theory.

Program summary

1. Analysis, study and translation of texts from different areas, themes and domains of generalist nature according to the multiple working languages available.
   2. Translation and writing strategies and techniques.
   3. Familiarisation with diverse formats, file types, media and contexts within the framework of language industries.
   4. Notions of project management.
   5. Main stages of the translation process.
   6. Quality control/ management and assessment.
