Objectives of education
This course unit aims to present the basic concepts found necessary to the comprehension of the syntactical and semantic properties of Portuguese in comparison with other languages, and demonstrate the utility of corpus linguistics to translation studies and practice.
Key learning outcomes
After the course, students with a positive grade will be capable of:
– Developing linguistic analysis and observation skills.
– Applying correctly the acquired theoretical concepts.
– Analysing the operation of Portuguese, by developing observation competences applicable to other foreign languages.
– Adopting methodologies for the compilation and research of parallel and comparable corpora.
– Mobilizing technological tools for linguistic analysis.
– Creating bilingual resources useful for lexicography and translation.
Program summary
The course unit is divided in four modules:
– Core grammatical concepts necessary for describing linguistic phenomena.
– Introduction to Corpus Linguistics applied to Translation: theoretical and methodological aspects.
– Stages for the creation and research of a parallel or comparable corpus through quantitative and qualitative analysis tools.
– Creation of corpus-based bilingual resources.

Teaching methods
Constructivist learning approach which reinforces student’s metalinguistic conscience through the compilation and analysis of corpus. Relevant materials, including guides of on-site sessions, recommended reading and other useful resources will be made available on UMinho’s e-learning platform.
Assessment methods
Continuous assessment (individual or group assignments, on-site or remotely).
Students on an alternative evaluation regimen should implement a specific and individual work plan, to be previously established with the professor.
