On this page you will find a selection of monolingual dictionaries in German, Spanish, French, English and Portuguese.

German dictionaries:

Canoo Net. An explanatory dictionary which enables you to check synonyms, word forms, morphology, and grammar rules.

Wortschatz Universität Leipzig. Enables you to research a word in the corpus and shows and presents the following results: total number of occurrence, referent area, grammar specifications, synonyms, words of the same family…

DWDS. A dictionary with over 41,000 entries, it’s more than word definition, this website indicates synonyms, word etymology, and words in the context based on 15 corpora.

Spanish dictionaries:

Diccionario de la Real Academia Española  (RAE) contains over 88,000 entries.

Diccionario panhispánico de dudas. Enables you to elucidate some doubts about orthography, lexical and grammar rules.

Dicionário de María Moliner. María Moliner Dictionary.

Diccionario Clave. Suggests an explanation of expressions with the words searched.

Dicciomed. Medical-biological, historical and etymological.

El Castellano.org. Etymological dictionary of Spanish, grammar and punctuation rules.

French dictionaries:

CNRTL. Contains definitions, synonyms, antonyms and etymology of words from Centre National de Resources Textuelles et Lexicales.

Atilf. Informatised dictionary (Trésor de la Langue Française Informatisé). It allows you to search a word by its spelling or by its pronunciation.

Bescherelle. Enables you to search the complete conjugation of a specific verb.

Office Québécois de la Langue Française. Banque de dépannage linguistique, enables you to clarify some doubts about some specifics writing rules, for example: Punctuation.

Expressio. Enables you to check some explanations and origin of the French expressions, some of them are translated into various languages.

Larousse. Contains synonyms, antonyms, homonyms of words and expressions. This website also provides an encyclopaedic search.

Dicofr. Dictionary of computer and internet.

CRISCO (Centre de Recherche Inter-langues sur la Signification en COntexte, CNRS ‘ website(Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique)  is a synonyms dictionary and a dictionary of co-occurrences of a word.

English dictionaries:

Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary.   American and British definitions.

Online version of  Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English.

Acesso ao dicionário e à enciclopédia Chambers. Chambers’dictionary and encyclopedia.

Collins. American and British definitions.

Oxford Learners Dictionary. especially for English students. In all entries in the dictionary, you will see speaker icons following the part of speech. Clicking these will play a recording of the word spoken by an American (blue icon) and British (red icon) speaker.

Portuguese dictionaries:

Dicionário Priberam contains noun phrase, synonyms, antonyms. You can also check according to the Norm of  European Portuguese or Brazilian, with or without the Portuguese orthographic agreement of 1990.

Infopédia. Porto Editora encyclopaedic dictionary according to European Portuguese. It contains definitions, noun frase, idioms and proverbs; general vocabulary, technical and scientific.

Ciberdúvidas contains explanations about Portuguese orthography, grammar rules, etc.
